Julio Ponce, of Clifton, is believed to have gone into a Nutley home on Monday, Oct. 9, on Raymond Avenue, and taken a woman's purse from a tabletop around 10 a.m., while she was showering, Nutley Police Director Alphonse Petracco and Chief Thomas Strumolo said.

The woman said she heard loud knocking at her front door. Moments later, she found her back door wide open and her pocketbook gone, police said.

Ponce's arrest was announced on Tuesday, Oct. 24, on charges of credit card theft, burglary, and theft by unlawful taking.

"I want to ensure our residents’ safety remains our number one objective," Petracco said. "Our officers have arrested more than a dozen criminals committing burglaries since implementing special details.

"The Chief and I will continue to supplement patrols as needed to ensure our message is received. If you commit a crime in Nutley we will exert every effort to bring justice."
